An important aspect of the SCA is that each member has a "persona" - a character that they portray. The persona is someone who could have lived in period, but is not a real historical person. Thus, someone might portray Richard the Stout-Hearted, but not Richard the Lion-Hearted. (In this way the SCA differs from some other historical recreation groups such as many Civil War groups.)
