...Twelfth Night

Originally a celebration of the Twelfth Night of Christmas (and here, you thought it was just a song!), "Twelfth Night" is the Barony of Nordskogen's traditional winter celebration.

There is no particular time or place theme for this year's event. Instead, Twelfth Night this year is a celebration of winter itself, a "camping" event dedicated to winter pastimes and activities.

...Camp Courage

"A camping event in Minnesota in January???"

Well, not exactly. Camp Courage is a retreat and conference center, used during the summer months for camps for disabled children. This means that all the paths are paved and will be plowed in the winter. The lodging facilities are all winterized and most rooms look more like a hotel, or a dormitory, than a camp. There are two to six beds per room, and most rooms share a bathroom with only one other.

...Appropriate Dress

While we won't be pitching tents, a lot of the site is out-of-doors. Even if you focus only on indoor activities, you will at least have to go outside to go from building to building. We cannot stress the following strongly enough:

Dress Warmly

While we certainly encourage you to make or acquire period clothing to fend off the cold, we are emphasizing safety over period-ness. If the only boots you have are mundane boots, wear them.

We hope to have links to pages with information on period cold-weather clothing soon.

...Food on Site

We strongly encourage attendees to consider signing up for one of our meal plans, especially if you intend to spend the entire weekend, or a significant part of it. Please understand that the closest places to site to eat are about a 30 minute drive. The site doesn't want us having food in the sleeping areas of the cabins because of concerns over mice. This is the site's policy, not ours. We are also not supposed to use the kitchen areas that are in some of the cabins for the same reason. The policies are different in the family cabin due to the potentially different needs of kids at the event. If you have special needs feel free to contact me so we can figure something out for you.

...Alcohol, Tobacco, and Armaments

Alcohol

The site is wet. But remember: be smart and be safe. If you make a mess, somebody has to clean it up, and it will probably be one of your friends.

IMPORTANT! Please note that Security will be enforcing the laws of the State of Minnesota with respect to the consumption of alcohol by minors. You must be 21 years of age or older to consume alcohol anywhere on site at this event.

Tobacco

Smoking is prohibited inside all buildings. No exceptions.

Smoking is permitted outside, and appropriate disposal recepticles exist near various doorways to various buildings.

Please note that these are not our policies, but the site's.

Armaments
  • We kindly request that weapons be peace-bonded.
  • When displaying any weapon to a group, please remember to shout, "Clear!" before hand and use common sense while the weapon is unsheathed.
  • Absolutely no aggressive behaviour with live steel will be permitted at any time
  • All rules that apply to sharpened weapons apply to unsharpened weapons, including schlagers and epees, with the obvious exception of the use of these weapons in marshalled combat.
  • Anybody breaking any of these rules, or otherwise upsetting Security by their offensive use of live steel, will find themselves relieved of their weapons until the end of the event.

Greetings and welcome to you traveler. You have arrived at the Inn of the Silver Snowflake, where many people have found a warm fire, a soft bed, good food and great quantities of drink for a night. I am Giovanna , head cook of the Inn and I feel proud to note that never has a person gone for want when I have manned the fire.

At this festive time of year our little inn has seen many a traveler come and go and we expect quite a few to dust the snow from their shoes in the upcoming days. We have heard tell that Their Majesties Themselves, accompanied by a number of noble friends, have been spied on the great road that runs through these lands. If we are fortunate to have Them spend an evening under our roof, I feel confident that the cooks, grooms and maids of this Inn will make Them feel as welcome as they do in the great halls of Their palace.

As head cook for this inn my staff and I have to keep the fires burning at all times of the day or night in order to provide food for the hungry folks that come and go. Do not fret, for you do not need the gold of a King’s coffer to find a warm meal at my table. All will be fed what they can afford, and I would think Saint Wenseslas would shed a tear if I sent a poor man out into the cold without warm broth and good wheat bread in his stomach. Even if they can afford naught, I am fortunate that my good employer allows me to reward a willing worker with a warm meal.

Our larders are filled with the fruits of the fall harvests and the catch of the hunters bow and trap so we can provide all that the land of England has to offer to those who sit at table.

For morning meals in the winter we frequently serve:

  • Manchat soaked in eggs and fried over the fire
  • Apple compote, mixed with honey and spices
  • Joint of meat
  • Whole wheat bread
  • Various fruit preserves
  • Butter

The evening meals vary a great deal, depending on the time of year, how many we are feeding and who they are, and most importantly what we have left in the cellar. Winter lends itself well to hearty pies, roasts, and the various gourds and root vegetables that can weather the cold months well.

For those who can afford the full board, they will be glad for a bed nearby. They will feast on:

  • Fine sausage
  • Joint of Beef
  • Roasted Chicken
  • Pork with fruit
  • Cheese or vegetable pie
  • Pottage
  • Vegetables
  • Pudding
  • Bread
  • Butter
  • Various cakes and sweets

For those who have little to spend I serve a good beef broth, hearty wheat bread, and a pottage with vegetables. Frequently there are dishes that come back from the tables untouched, and wishing to prevent waste I send them to those who may have never tasted such fine delicacies.

You will find the riches of the Magi under this roof and all are welcome!
